The Glory of Ordinary

by Mark Chmiel

There we sat at Cafe Ventana
Two hours on a Thursday afternoon

You heard my shtick about “Be average”
My neurotic update on Dear Layla

Your serenity (so it seems to me)
About your future path

Yes I’d rather read one letter from you
100 times

Than read 100
One-liners from the sages

There’s nothing like proximity
So as to savor your laugh and musings

People leaving us alone
Not paying us any mind

Ah the joy of being nobodies
Such gratitude for real presence

Two hours on a Thursday afternoon
There we sat at Cafe Ventana
