The Way It Looked in 2002

by Mark Chmiel

Sure he was obedient to orders
But he went beyond mere duty

The IDF soldier was all revved up
With not a second to waste

To do what needed to be done
And to do it with gusto

Do it like there’s no tomorrow
Do it with exuberant efficiency

Bulldoze bulldoze
Bulldoze

Over and over
In the Jenin refugee camp

Generate havoc hour after hour
With a gleam in the eyes

The ecstasy of seeing
Palestinian homes crumbling

The pleasure of sticking it
To all the “terrorists”

The satisfaction of making
An unambiguous statement:

Don’t you ever dare
Mess with us again

–outtake from Dear Layla Welcome to Palestine
